Know Before You Buy: Not All DJI Drones and Dealers Are the Same
At Altitude Hobbies, we have been hearing a common trend more and more lately – customers who thought they found a great deal online for a DJI drone, only to run into serious problems after the unit arrived. Bargain prices can be tempting, but they often come with hidden risks. If the deal seems too good to be true, there’s probably a catch hidden behind that low price.
Issues like locked accounts, region-specific limitations, and lack of warranty coverage can turn a simple purchase into a major headache. Buying from a trusted, authorized DJI dealer helps you avoid these problems from day one.
What Can Go Wrong?
If the seller isn’t authorized by the manufacturer or is buying from unauthorized distributors, here are some common issues you may encounter:
-
Pre-activated drones
Some drones are already tied to someone else’s account because they were intended for use in another country so the distributor activated the drone before it was shipped to the re-seller. Without the original owner removing that connection, you may not be able to fully use the aircraft. -
Region-Limited Devices
Drones built for other parts of the world may not operate correctly in the United States. In some cases, they may not meet U.S. compliance standards or function at all. We’ve heard of more and more “dealers” popping up overnight, shipping DJI drones meant for use in Pakistan, Nigeria, or other foreign countries. They don’t advertise this information and you won’t know until it’s too late. -
No Warranty or Backup Support
Many unauthorized sales don’t include valid manufacturer warranties. If something breaks or malfunctions, you could be left without North American repair options. Once you discover a problem, the reseller will leave you on read.
What can you do?
Look for an established DJI dealer with a proven track record. Beware of resellers that just popped up in the last year. Watch out for terms like “pre-activated” on their website product listings.
Be wary of “dealers” who only sell on Facebook or other social media sites. They may have a company name and say they are an authorized DJI dealer but that doesn’t mean they are legitimate. Ask them for proof. They will either be listed on the DJI website or will be able to provide a letter from an authorized DJI distributor showing they are a legitimate sub-dealer.
Ask for the serial number of the drone. If the seller doesn’t want to provide it, something may be wrong. Verify the authenticity, activation status, and intended market with DJI Support before purchase.
If the price is significantly lower than other leading dealers, something is probably wrong.
